Navigating Price Risk
In ages past the principle risk in international trade were the uncharted oceans. While ships were conducting trade by 3500 B.C. an all too common occurrence was that a ship laden with goods would leave port and never be seen again. The mariners were at the greatest risk and they attempted to combat this peril with knowledge and technology. Norse and Oceania mariners navigated by the sun and the stars. The compass, a Chinese invention that dates back to 220 B.C., was of limited value until magnetic variation was mapped out in the 1700’s.
The oldest maritime charts date back to 1275. The sea astrolabe was in wide use by 1470. The invention of an accurate chronometer by John Harrison in 1726 made the measurement of longitude was possible. Sextants came along after 1770. And now anyone with a hand held Global Positioning System cannot get lost on planet Earth. From charts to chronometers to satellites the application of knowledge through technology has all but vanquished the risk of travel by sea.

These days the principle uncharted waters of commerce are the financial markets and arguably the greatest risk in the capitalist system is price risk. Fundamental analysis does a poor job of estimating price risk. When it comes to evaluating price risk technical analysis is a superior technology. The chief focus of our efforts at United Energy is the application of technical analysis to the task of assessing price risk in the energy markets.

Our charts plot the voyages of price trends across Elliott Waves and RSI divergence. Our chronometers measure seasonal patterns and time cycles. Our compass points to candlestick reversal patterns. Based on our technical price risk assessment we offer practical and timely strategies and tactics for traders and hedgers alike. Our analysis is presented in the “Research Reports” section of this web site. For those with a clearing or consulting relationship with United Energy we are able to offer our technical expertise on a transaction by transaction basis.
