The principal advantage of a clearing relationship with United Energy is that every clearing client has complete access to the full output of our technical advisory services. There is an old proverb from the Tao Te Ching of Lao Tsu, "in action, watch the timing." In the energy markets timing is everything. Being right too early is no different than being completely wrong. It is a gross understatement to say that the markets are volatile, and volatility means both price risk for hedgers and opportunities for traders.
Fundamental analysis is an excellent tool for balancing inventory and production requirements, but it is a tool completely unsuited to managing either price risk or trading programs. Fundamental analysis yields neither timing indicators nor price targets. The timing of entry and exit points and the accurate assessment of price targets are absolutely critical factors in the success of both hedging and trading programs. For a hedger, it makes the difference between locking in a profit to enhance margins and locking in a loss to limit damages. For a trader, it makes the difference between generating profits and accumulating losses. Timing and targeting are the specialties of technical analysis.
